Absolutely Fabulous RIP Lacroix – Its not a Designers Job to Fix the Economy

Harlette was featured in the Couture Designer shoot Past Present and Future for Modern Wedding Vol 45 this week.

  

 

Speaking of Couture Designers the Marc Jacob’s quote springs to mind especially this week with the news of bankruptcy of Christian Lacroix. “Its not a designers job to fix the economy its our job to provide creativity and inspiration to decorate and adorn to aspire to something more” and with that sad we are feeling very sad over Lacroix 😦

We need the investment banking industry to invest in Haute Couture as a longtail strategy. Equity and VC’s should avoid the rush on short gains on ready to wear for without Haute Couture there is no diffusion to High Street..

If we starve Haute Couture & all that is created with it, in the end we starve the industry, the consumer & then Fashion is indeed dead…

The 10 year payback plan at the expense of the Haute Couture arm of Lacroix is a sad time for the fashion industry.

Why did Lacroix fail, for it was top of mind in shows such as absolutely fabulous and the song with the same title by the petshop boys

Christian Lacroix, the designer, started out at the French high fashion house Hermes in 1978 and moved on to Jean Patou, the creator of the so-called designer tie, in 1981. His ostentatious creations caught the eye of Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of the luxury retail conglomerate LVMH.

Mr Arnault, a mentor to Mr Lacroix, set up the fashion house with the financial backing of LVMH in 1987 with high hopes that it would replicate the success of many other nouveau ateliers around the world, such as Italy’s Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace, and the Japanese minimalist Yohji Yamamoto.

While Mr Lacroix might not agree, perhaps the low point of his career came when he formed a partnership with Avon to launch a new scent, Christian Lacroix Rouge for women and Christian Lacroix Noir for men, complete with body lotion, shower gel and after shave

Lingerie was also on the list of turn around strategies for the company and even this did not bring the success that the company ultimately deserved. We leave you with the final Haute Couture show from Christian Lacroix…
